JockeysJerry Bailey Jerry Bailey was born in Dallas Tx. on August 29th 1957. He has been racing since 1974 and in 2004 he broke Angel Cordero’s long standing win record of 640 races at Saratoga Race Course. He was behind Angel by 8 victories at the start of the meet and proceeded to win 29 races to finish with an astounding 661 career victories. During his amazing career, Jerry Bailey has ridden many of the world's greatest horses including the Mighty Cigar. He was aboard during the horse’s charge to greatness, running 16 unbeaten races in a row. He also rode Grindstone to win the Kentucky Derby in 1996 (much to Bob Baffert's annoyance!) and in 2003 rode Belmont winner Empire Maker. In 2004 Jerry rode Peace Rules, Pleasantly Perfect and Kitten's Joy. He leads all jockeys in Breeders Cup wins with 14 victories in 89 starts. Jerry was inducted to the Racing Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the George Woolf Award in 1992, an honor which was presented by the Jockeys Guild at Santa Anita Park. The immortal Seabiscuit, one of Woolf's greatest partners, finally won the elusive Santa Anita Handicap here in 1940. After taking a short layoff to recover from a broken wrist he received while preparing for one of the many hurricanes to hit Florida last year, Jerry continues to ride and on occasion give wonderful color commentary on many nationally televised racing programs. Jerry now resides in Davie, Florida with his wife and son. |
