The second leg of the USA Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes held each year at the marvellous Pimlico Race Course, which first opened its doors on October 25, 1870, making it the second oldest racetrack in the USA. You cannot mention the Preakness without mentioning the Triple Crown, the series of horse races that, in all due respect to the Breeders' Cup, defines the sport of horse racing. The Preakness Stakes is an event that is as celebrated in Maryland as the Derby is in Louisville and the Belmont Stakes in New York.

A record crowd of 112,668 was witness to history at Pimlico Race Course on May 15th 2004 for the second leg of the Triple Crown. Someday Farm’s Smarty Jones moved one step closer to winning the coveted Triple Crown with a resounding, record setting victory in the 129th running of the Grade I, $1,000,000 Preakness Stakes. Unfortunately Smarty was beaten in the final leg and it is now some 30 years since the Triple Crown was landed.
